Department of Digital Systems

A System can be defined as a collection of interacting entities that constitute a unified whole for a specific purpose. Digital is a system that stores, processes and transmits information in digital form and, therefore, is closely related to computer technology and information technology. The Department of Digital Systems of the University of Thessaly covers the entire basic range of knowledge of computer technology and informatics, so that its graduates have the professional rights and professional prospects that the graduates of the Departments related to informatics have, but also provides knowledge specialization which allows these graduates to develop innovative systems for emerging sectors, with a large economic object and social impact in the near and distant future.

The studies in the Department of Digital Systems consist of eight (8) semesters. In the first four (4) semesters all courses are compulsory and infrastructure knowledge is provided in the subject of the department. In each of the next two (2) semesters, two (2) compulsory courses and four (4) electives are included, while in each of the last two (2) semesters, three (3) elective courses and a parallel annual dissertation are included, providing the student with knowledge of scientific specialization.

As a university technology department, emphasis is placed on both the theoretical foundation of knowledge and its practical applications, through laboratory exercises, but also on the elaboration of assignments, where the student is required to work creatively, either individually or as a member of a small group. The culmination of this approach is the elaboration of the Thesis, where the student, making an intensive, systematic and relatively long effort, is called to prove that he can fully deal with a specific problem. The student chooses the topic of his / her dissertation to touch his / her scientific interests and with the cooperation and guidance of his / her supervising professor deepens in this topic, studies the relevant cutting-edge scientific developments, implements the requirements to meet the requirements of the topic and captures all of his work in an original structured book. This book represents the student and is an important resource, both for the possible continuation of his studies at postgraduate level and for his professional career.
